A long, heavy, 15ct gold longuard chain dating to c.1860-70. It is a looped chain, over 1 meter long, with rounded links and connected with a swivel clasp, perfect for pendants. It's long enough to be looped at least twice around the neck. It has English original hallmarks on the clasp, and would have originally been used as a watch chain or for a ladies muffle - the purpose of a guard chain was to prevent loosing items from pockets, and to make them easy to retrieve - the Victorian's did not approve of rummaging in ones pockets! This is an excellent condition chain, perfect for either sex.
