This is an excellent quality early 1900’s Essex Crystal bar brooch, featuring a hand painted mallard mounted on a rifle. Essex crystal is a unique style of jewellery that was developed in Victorian era Belgium, where a polished cabochon rock crystal (not glass) is hand carved on the underside, like a reverse intaglio. Then the carved-out design is painted so that it seems to float, in three dimensions, inside the crystal when viewed from the front. It is incredibly skillful work, and they usually depicted country side or hunting scenes such as these.
